Minimum Fitness: You must have a base level of strength and fitness – the Hiking Conditioning Program can help with this, two months consistent training would give you the base level you need.

I am really excited to be able to share with you one of my favourite places in the world. As many of you may know I am extremely passionate about improving physical and mental health with hiking and exploring the great outdoors. If you are looking for an adventure in 2019 then you are in the right place! Expect to be fully immersed in nature, eat locally sourced food and meet like minded people.
Max Lowery – Guided hike, mobility and stretching sessions, health & fitness advice.
Accommodation – 2 nights in “eco yurts”, 2 nights in mountain “refuges”.
Food – All food and drink for 4 days (this will include some locally sourced wine and beer).
Travel – Pick up and drop off at Perpignan airport or train station.
Equipment – Sleeping bag, air mattress, hiking rucksack. Please let me know if you are bringing your own.
Photography – High resolution images of the entire trip, to be used at your disposal.
Hiking Conditioning Program – To get your body ready for the hike, includes workouts and mobility flows.

You can fly into Barcelona El Prat Airport from most International destinations. From the airport you get a shuttle to Barcelona Sants Train Station and from there you get a fast train to Perpignan Train Station (about 1 hour and 15 minutes) where I can pick you up (please time your arrival at Perpignan Train Station for around 11am local time and your departure for around 10am).
The train times can be awkward, it is often easier to stay for one night in Barcelona and take the train early next morning.

The hike is going to be challenging both physically and mentally. It is unsuitable for anyone who doesn’t have a decent base level of fitness or any previous hiking experience.
The first two days will be mosttly uphill, with some down hill. As we climb the air will get thinner which will make everything harder, on top of this you will be carrying your own supplies. You can expect your bag to weigh around 10kg.
On the third day, after staying the night at the Refuge des Cortalets, first thing in the morning we will climb the highest mountain in the region, known as Le Canigou (27940m), and watch the sunrise (weather permitting).
We will then make our way all the way back down the mountain to be picked up and taken back to the Can Tillet Farmhouse.
Here are rough estimations of the distances and elevation involved:
Distance – 18km, Ascent – 1150m
Distance – 10km, Ascent – 600m
18km Ascent 600m, Descent – 2000m
Morning: Picked up from Perpignan airport by Max Lowery.
Midday: Lunch at Can Tillet prepared by Max Lowery, exploring the local land, stretching and mobility session.
Evening: Dinner at Can Tillet, prepared by Max Lowery.
Morning: Prepared breakfast (optional) set off for the hike.
Midday: Packed Lunch at an abandoned mining village.
Evening: Cooked dinner on an open fire at the first refuge.
Morning: Packed breakfast – Continue Hike.
Midday: Packed lunch somewhere incredibly scenic!
Evening: Arrive at Refuge des Cortalets for traditional French meal, sleep in beds, hot showers (included in price).
Morning: Hike up Le Canigou to watch the sunrise, return back to Refuge des Cortalets for breakfast.
Midday: Walk back down the mountain, packed Lunch somewhere incredibly scenic!
Mid Afternoon: Picked up by mini bus, taken back to Can Tillet for naps and relaxation.
Evening: Restaurant Dinner in local village (included in price).
Morning: Drop off at Perpignan Airport or Train Station by Max Lowery
Arrival and Departure Nights
2 nights in a French farmhouse called Can Tillet which is a renovated sheep and endurance horse farm set in a beautiful isolated, rural area in the foothills of the Pyrenees. The farm is perched above the picturesque Catalan village of La Bastide at an altitude of 950m.
We are currently in the process of building “Off Grid, Eco Yurts”. Each yurt will contain two single beds, so you will be sharing each yurt with one other person. If you are a couple, there will be the option of putting the single beds together.
For now, I don’t have any photos to show you but as they are built I will be able to share how they will look.
Please take note – sharing conditions may be mixed gender, this will depend on guests signed up for each retreat.
2 nights in traditional mountain refuges.
On the first hiking night, we will stay at the Refuge d’Estanyol. Unstaffed refuges, such as this one, provide basic accommodation along the footpaths and are typically an open plan one-room cabin with bunk beds and a fire place (without electricity, running water or toilets.)
The second hiking night we will stay in a staffed mountain refuge called Refuge des Cortalets. This refuge is larger than the previous and is similar to a hostel. The accommodation will have bunk beds in shared rooms. It will also have showers and a restaurant/cafe. We will have two prepared meals at this refuge (included in the price).
As previously mentioned the walk will be challenging both physically and mentally and will be unsuitable for anyone without previous hiking experience or any health conditions or injuries that could affect your physical abilities this includes: respiratory issues, CVD and diabetes (unless there is written permission from a doctor).
